HealthTrust presents…”Tip of the Iceberg: Alterations of PK/PD in Patients Undergoing Targeted Temperature Management”

Targeted temperature management (TTM), or therapeutic hypothermia (TH), is utilized in cardiac arrest patients following ROSC to preserve neurologic function and improve long term outcomes. The induction, maintenance and rewarming experienced by the patient during TTM causes acute physiological changes, namely shivering, that are managed by a variety of pharmacotherapies.   Additionally, lower temperatures impact the pharmacokinetics (PK) of many commonly administered medications in the ICU, including those not included in a traditional TTM order set. This course serves as a review of TTM, the published pharmacokinetic changes in hypothermic patients, and strategies for managing patients undergoing TTM while considering these alterations in PK.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists and Nurses  |  At the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  1. Compare pharmacokinetic parameters for normothermic and hypothermic patients
  2. Identify medications likely to require adjustment due to targeted temperature management
  3. Select monitoring parameters appropriate for targeted temperature management patients
