Generating waste cannot be completely avoided within any healthcare facility. Costs and risks can be decreased by a well thought out, organized and implemented waste management plan. How does a facility know what should be thrown out, recycled, put into a red bag or sharps bin, put into a hazardous pharmaceutical waste bin, or if any of these are the right choices? From the clinical, food service, facilities and EVS teams to the pharmacy and OR – communicating the what, where and why can be part of effective waste streams management. The presenter will provide examples of managing and shifting waste streams as part of an environmental sustainability waste plan, as well as developing education and communications as to which items are considered hazardous, what should be red-bagged, what can be recycled or reprocessed, what a sharps container should and should not contain, and more.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize where many materials from a healthcare facility can be disposed of and options for disposal.
