Albumin is a colloid fluid commonly used to enhance hemodynamics in various disease states, yet its application in critically ill patients remains a subject of debate. It is FDA-approved for conditions such as hypovolemia, ascites, hypoalbuminemia, acute nephrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. However, there is limited clinical evidence to support its use for these indications, and current guidelines do not provide strong recommendations in favor of its administration.

1. Recall the differences between crystalloid and colloid intravenous (IV) solutions
2. Identify intensive care unit (ICU) patient populations in which albumin administration may be harmful
3. Recognize disease state(s) which may derive benefit from albumin administration in the ICU

Note about CE credit: If you plan to obtain credit for a live session, stay until the end of the presentation to receive the verification code you will need to obtain the continuing education credit. CE credit is individual. No group credit is available. Each person must register for a webinar and attend the webinar in its entirety in order to receive an email after the event with instructions on how to apply for continuing education credit.
