Please Note: Continuing education credit is only available to those attending the session live. CE credit is not available when accessing the program on demand.

The updated 2023 American Diabetes Association guideline on diabetes technology includes a strong recommendation to provide patients with diabetes who are on multiple daily injections or continuous insulin infusions with access to a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). These CGMs aggregate important data regarding a patient’s glucose control and capture trends to allow patients to intervene, when necessary, and providers to optimize medication regimens. There has been a recent increase in the use of CGMs in tandem with vast improvements in terms of technology related to accuracy, ease of use and access to these devices. This program will provide an overview of the use of personal continuous glucose monitors (CGM) available to patients living with diabetes in the outpatient setting. Topics to be discussed will include components of a CGM device, important counseling points, financial coverage, and the review and interpretation of generated data.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists   |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the most appropriate continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device for a patient
  2. Recall solutions to overcome barriers to obtaining a CGM for a patient
  3. Recognize an example of a CGM report to help optimize glycemic control for a patient

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs   |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the different components of different continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices
  2. Recall common barriers to CGM access for patients
  3. Identify strategies to use CGM data to counsel patients
