HealthTrust presents…“Hot topics in Geriatric Medicine: Vaccination in Older Adults”

Recently there have been many changes to vaccination guidelines and/or availability for older adults. In November 2019, the CDC updated the recommendation for PPSV23 among adults ≥65 to include a component of shared decision-making. Additionally, the CDC has provided clinical guidance for vaccination against shingles during the evolving shortages of Shingrix. Older adults are also at a higher risk of developing serious complications from the flu and benefit from appropriate annual immunization. This session will provide an overview of age related changes to the immune system and respiratory tract and the importance of immunization in older adults.

Learning Objectives for Nurses & Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to

  1. Describe age related changes to the immune system and respiratory tract
  2. Compare and contrast standard and high dose influenza vaccinations
  3. Explain shared decision making for PCV13 for immunocompetent adults over the age of 65
  4. Discuss management of shingles vaccination during shortage

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to…

  1. List brand names for influenza vaccinations preferred in older adults
  2. Recall appropriate storage conditions for vaccinations indicated in older adults
