HealthTrust presents…“Drug Allergies & Cross-Sensitivities”

Healthcare professionals are aware of drug allergies and the cross-reactivities of drug classes, but there remains a gap in knowledge regarding their rate and prevalence. It is not a simple decision on choosing alternative therapies when a patient presents with a common allergy. Alternatives exist to be used if a common drug allergy is present, but decisions are made at times without the data and research at hand. During this session, the presenter will discuss the common drug allergies and their levels of cross-reactivities. Medication classes discussed are beta-lactam antibiotics, sulfa-containing compounds, NSAIDs and aspirin, radiocontrast media along with latex. The classes chosen for review represent a large percentage of patients who may present with an allergy and involves discussion on the realities of hypersensitivity reactions and their levels of cross-reactivities. Clarification is provided on certain classes along with cautions as to which medication classes are not safe to use together.

Learning Objectives for Nurses & Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to

  1. Describe the most common drug allergies and characteristics of an allergic reaction
  2. Distinguish the different drug class allergies and their mechanism of action

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to…
