“Is There A Role For High Flow Nasal Therapy In the Emergency Department?”

Saxe Communications, Clinical Foundations & Teleflex LLC present…“Alternatives to Intubation for the Older Patient in the Emergency Department”

Nearly 2,000 articles have been published over the last 10 years on high flow nasal therapy (HFNT). It is a treatment modality that has been proven to be a viable alternative to conventional oxygen therapy, and in some cases, to noninvasive ventilation. Significant improvements in oxygenation, reduction of work of breathing, lower rates of  have been some of the positive outcomes associated with the use of HFNT in clinical settings such as the acute care and ICU. HFNT has shown to have a positive role in the ED has well. The goal of this webinar is to clarify the role of HFNT in the management of patients with respiratory distress in the ED through a review of the evidence and the results of a recent hospital-based study.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the physiologic mechanisms in HFNT that helps reduce the WOB in acute respiratory distress
  2. Describe the potential role of using HFNT in the ED to reduce rate of admissions
  3. Identify important predictors of success after using HFNT for the hypoxemic patient in the ED
  4. Discuss the evidence comparing HFNT, conventional oxygen therapy and NIV in the ED
