Virtual HTU: “Controlling Care in the Face of White Bagging”

HealthTrust presents…Virtual HTU: “Controlling Care in the Face of White Bagging”

Download the content.

Shifts in payor reimbursement mandate certain infusion medications be acquired through outside pharmacies. Payors will not cover medications submitted under buy and bill, putting some IDNs at risk for millions of dollars annually. Use of outside pharmacy-dispensed infusion medications is known as white-bagging or third-party medication (3PM). This session will provide an overview of how one IDN’s Pharmacy Services used an EPIC electronic tool, available to all staff, to see the status of medication authorization and acquisition. The goal of the program is to enhance patient care, support front-line clinic staff, streamline scheduling, reduce waste and patient financial toxicity.

Learning Objectives | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Recall new payor requirements mandating that medications be acquired by outside pharmacies
  • Recognize tools created electronically to support a transparent process for third party medications
  • Identify strategies to minimize patient and organizational financial risk related to third party medications
