3M Health Care Academy* presents…“Preventing Blood Stream Infections in the Dialysis Patient: Addressing Intraluminal & Extraluminal Catheter Contamination”

This course describes clinical challenges associated with hemodialysis (HD) catheter maintenance that can impact the bloodstream infection (BSI) risk. The intraluminal and extraluminal route of contamination, challenges with disinfection of IV access points, as well as IV site maintenance are examined. Supporting clinical evidence is presented along with solutions to improve BSI risk and care and maintenance of the HD catheter.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify sources of contamination that can lead to bloodstream infection
  2. Describe recommended practices and evidence-based interventions for dialysis catheter maintenance to reduce BSI risk
  3. Discuss clinical challenges in the dialysis environment that are associated with catheter maintenance that can impact outcomes
  4. Identify solutions to address these challenges and clinical studies that support these solutions
