HealthTrust presents…“New Medications & FDA Updates 2018”

In 2018, there were 59 new molecular entities and 2 new recombinant therapies approved by the FDA for use in the United States as well as several FDA drug safety alerts released: licensed pharmacists need to have knowledge of these new medications and warnings, including their mechanisms of action, dosing, adverse effects and drug interactions. This session will provide a summary review of all new medications approved by the FDA in 2018.  Pharmacists will become more competent in these medications and increase their understanding of the warnings, so they can appropriately apply to their daily practice.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. List the medications that were FDA-approved in 2018
  2. Describe the indications and mechanisms of action of the new medications
  3. Review adverse effects and patient safety information for these new medications
  4. Relate the medications FDA-approved in 2018 with those approved previously with similar indications
  5. Discuss important patient counseling and monitoring parameters for newly approved medications
  6. Identify drug safety warnings that were published by the FDA in 2018

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review appropriate storage instructions for the newly approved medications
  2. Discuss unique preparation instructions for these new medications
