HealthTrust presents this second in a series of six webinars on the topic of sustainability.

“A Nonprofit Approach to Developing a Corporate-Level Facility Energy Management Program”

Hospitals across the country have more than 2.5 times the energy intensity and carbon dioxide emissions of commercial office buildings annually, producing more than 30 pounds of CO2 emissions per square foot, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. A true understanding of how each facility operates and consumes energy is key to curtailing energy use across a health system. In this session, facility leaders from a large non-profit present a case study for supply chain professionals to consider recommending a systemwide energy management program to assist their facility or health system in meeting its energy reduction goals. Using a chronological approach, presenters will identify critical components of a successful energy program, provide starting points to best assess energy use, help attendees navigate early challenges that might be expected when launching such an initiative, and recommend metrics and reporting to effectively measure the program’s impact.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Utilize a set of basic tools to evaluate and conduct a meaningful assessment of an organization’s capabilities and potential barriers to implementing an energy management program.
  2. Create the business case for obtaining leadership buy-in for this and related sustainability initiatives such as converting to LED lighting; and program awareness and employee engagement in efforts to turn off lights and equipment when not in use, etc.
  3. Evaluate, then recommend (insourced or out-sourced) resources that support appropriate planning, execution and ongoing management of a successful program.
  4. Identify effective metrics to track and report on savings and reduction results.
