HealthTrust presents…“Management of Critically Ill Patients with Liver Disease: A Conversation in Coagulation”

The session will begin with an overview of the coagulation cascade in relation to coagulopathy associated with liver disease. Conventional methods for assessing bleeding and thrombosis risk will be reviewed and newer techniques such as thromboelastography (TEG/ROTEM) will be reviewed for pharmacists. Pharmacologic management of critically ill patients with liver disease will be discussed, and the presenter will provide a focused review on literature discussing the use of novel coagulation agents such as prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) to reverse coagulopathy both in surgical and non‐surgical settings.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the advantages of using TEG/ROTEM to assess bleeding and thrombosis risk in patients with liver disease.
  2. Recommend appropriate blood products or pharmacologic agents based on a thromboelastography tracing.
  3. List proposed benefits of using prothrombin complex concentrate to reverse coagulopathy in critically ill
    patients with liver disease.
