“How to Improve the Outcomes of Patients at Risk of Prolonged Ventilatory Support”

Getinge* Care presents…“How to Improve the Outcomes of Patients at Risk of Prolonged Ventilatory Support”

Invasive ventilation can be a lifesaving treatment, but the prolonged application is common and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and long-term physical and cognitive problems. Research aiming to reduce ventilation duration has recently focused on sedation limitation and protocolized weaning care. Ventilation modes, such as Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA), may potentially benefit in reducing time on ventilation. This presentation will examine the results of RESTUS trial. This single-center randomized controlled feasibility study compare NAVA and pressure support ventilation (PSV) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, heart failure and ARDS at risk of prolonged mechanical ventilation as a tool to lessen the need for sedative medications and shorten ventilator days.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the physiology of Edi monitoring and NAVA ventilation.
  • Discuss using the Edi and NAVA ventilation as part of a weaning and extubation strategy.
  • Describe the conclusions of the RESTUS trial.
