Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable disease characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and limitations to airflow. Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapy for the management of COPD is used to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms and exacerbations, increase exercise tolerance, and improve the overall quality of life. The 2021 update to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) includes information regarding the use of e-cigarettes as nicotine replacement, triple therapy and how the SARS-CoV-2 virus has impacted patients with COPD. This program will focus on new updates in the diagnosis, classification and treatment of COPD in the 2021 GOLD report.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall guideline updates to recommendations and current trends in COPD treatment.
  2. Identify recently published outcomes and studies regarding COPD management.
  3. Recognize appropriate recommendations for pharmacologic therapy in COPD patients based on new clinical evidence.
