HealthTrust presents…“Calming the Storm: Antipsychotic Strategies in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)”
Delirium and agitation are common challenges in the intensive care unit, contributing to increased morbidity, prolonged mechanical ventilation and greater healthcare costs. Although antipsychotics are frequently used in this setting, evidence for their benefit remains mixed and patient specific. Pharmacists play a pivotal role in optimizing antipsychotic use and interdisciplinary discussion in management. During this session, the presenter will share an interpretation of the current evidence and guidelines regarding antipsychotic use for delirium and agitation in critically ill patients and share strategies for how to evaluate patient-specific factors when recommending antipsychotic therapy.
Learning Objectives | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the pharmacologic profiles of commonly used antipsychotic therapies in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Recall current evidence-based guidelines regarding clinical indications for antipsychotic pharmacologic therapies for delirium and agitation in critically ill patients
- Identify patient-specific factors during interdisciplinary discussions and management when recommending antipsychotic pharmacologic therapy
