HealthTrust presents…“Management of Obesity in Patients with Heart Failure”
Obesity is highly prevalent among adults with heart failure and contributes to disease progression, increased hospitalizations and worsened quality of life, yet its management in this population remains complex and evolving. Rapid growth in evidence and the use of anti-obesity pharmacotherapies, specifically GLP-1 agents, has created knowledge gaps regarding efficacy, safety and guideline integration in patients with heart failure, underscoring the need for focused education. This presentation will include an overview of obesity as a risk factor for heart failure, its impact on heart failure pathophysiology, and current evidence and recommendations for weight loss management, including a comparison of lifestyle changes, GLP-1s, and bariatric surgery and their place in guideline recommended management.
Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the relationship between obesity and heart failure and its impact on disease progression and clinical outcomes.
- Identify evidence-based weight management strategies for adults with heart failure, including lifestyle and pharmacologic interventions.
- Recall guideline recommendations to develop individualized obesity management and monitoring plans for adults with heart failure.
Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the relationship between obesity and heart failure and its impact on patient care.
- Identify common weight management therapies used in adults with heart failure, including lifestyle and medication-based approaches.
- Recall how to support pharmacists in the safe management of patients with heart failure and obesity by assisting with medication workflows and reinforcing adherence and monitoring plans.
