Healthcare sustainability can feel like the “big green elephant” in the room. Your plate is already full, yet leadership is now asking you to lead a green team. How do you start a sustainable journey and drive the efficiencies, reductions and “do-good” results your C-suite is expecting with less colleagues and support staff to share load? Presenters offer a multi-facility and health system approach on where to begin, how to achieve quick wins and advice for gathering the team and support needed to share the journey. Topics addressed include conservation and cost savings that can be found in lighting and “ghost” energy, garbage and recycling best practices, the benefits of reprocessing, diverting housekeeping team resources, what to do with “all that blue wrap,” and energizing and engaging not only colleagues, but also the surrounding community—schools, colleges, patients and visitors—in projects such as drives to recycle things like used Christmas lights and batteries.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Create awareness of the need for hospitals to be environmentally friendly—conserving resources, creating efficiencies and reducing costs.
  2. Digest the big picture of organizational expectations and develop a plan to start a sustainable journey.
  3. Set up a strategic, green, aka “Do It” team—bringing together resources and expertise for achieving, tracking and sharing successes.
  4. Develop initiatives to involve colleagues and communities in being a part of the green team, helping to reduce environmental impacts now and for future generations.
