Individuals with diabetes are at increased risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) due to the presence of cardiac comorbidities, as well as the independent risk factor of diabetes itself. In response to this, there has been emerging data and clinical practice guideline recommendations on the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists for patients with high-risk or established ASCVD. Clinical trials have demonstrated cardiovascular benefit with these agents in individuals with diabetes and ASCVD, or indicators of high ASCVD risk. The purpose of this presentation is to evaluate these key clinical trials and discuss how their findings impact clinical pharmacy practice.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1.  Recall current guideline-directed medical therapy, common cardiovascular risk factors and challenges faced in the treatment of patients with diabetes
  2. Identify cardiac effect and clinical outcomes of agents within the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist drug classes when used in the treatment of diabetes
  3. Define the role of the pharmacist in promoting positive cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes
