Pharmaceutical class of trade (COT) refers to the various channels involved in the distribution and sale of pharmaceutical products. Pharmaceutical manufacturers assign COT designations to each purchaser. Depending on the COT, the Pharmaceutical manufacturer will provide discounts to the value-driving force. Manufacturers view, monitor and assign classes of trade inconsistently. The pharmaceutical class of trade model was developed by drug manufacturers, and parties such as the group purchasing organization (GPO) and purchasing facilities must adhere to the manufacturer classification. Limited information is available to healthcare professionals on the benefits and negatives of class of trade. This session’s focus will be to introduce the different pharmaceutical class of trade elements, evaluate the pros and cons of pharmaceutical COT and apply the impact of COT on health systems and group purchasing organizations.
