HealthTrust presents…”Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy: Antimicrobial Drug Dosing Challenges”

Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects approximately 25% of all critically ill patients, often requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) to ensure appropriate waste and fluid removal from the body. CRRT can significantly affect drug clearance resulting in changes in pharmacokinetics (PK) properties of many drugs, including antimicrobials. The use of CRRT is becoming more common, making it imperative that pharmacists recognize factors that affect antimicrobial PK during CRRT and recommend appropriate drug dosing regimens to ensure optimal pharmacologic effects. This program seeks to review the different modalities of CRRT and the various factors that contribute to drug PK changes and discuss the role of pharmacists in appropriate antimicrobial drug dosing in patients receiving CRRT.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast various modalities of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
  2. Identify CRRT-specific considerations impacting pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of antimicrobial drugs
  3. Recommend optimal antimicrobial dosing in patients receiving CRRT.
