Retained secretions in mechanically ventilated patients can interrupt oxygenation, ventilation and possibly cause serious complications. Endotracheal suctioning is an important part of care for these patients. The presenter will discuss two patient conditions where closed suction is preferred over open suction. Two key factors in the cost analysis of closed suction versus open suction will also be reviewed. Advantages and limitations of both closed and open suction will also be highlighted.
