HealthTrust presents...”Barbiturates are Back-An Update on the Inpatient Management of Acute Alcohol Withdrawal”
The current mainstay of treatment for acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome is benzodiazepines. However, there is an ample amount of evidence that is supporting the use of transitioning back to barbiturates. Clinicians need to be aware of the newer literature that supports the use of barbiturates over benzodiazepines. In this session, the presenter will review the pathophysiology of acute alcohol withdrawal and the associated complications, discuss scoring tools to assess alcohol withdrawal and review the pharmacologic options for alcohol withdrawal treatment, as well as discuss the literature to support the use of each of these agents.
Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses | At the end of this session, participants should be able to…
- Recall the pathophysiology of acute alcohol withdrawal and associated complications
- Identify the preferred therapeutic target when managing a patient in acute alcohol withdrawal
- Recognize literature-based recommendations for pharmacologic agents in the treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal
