As healthcare continues to evolve toward a prevention model, hospitals must expand their view of operations from taking care of patients to addressing some of the root causes of disease. Today, a number of leading health systems are using their purchasing power to drive change in their communities from a social, environmental and financial lens. Learn how partnering with its supply chain empowers hospitals to lead on key issues of public health such as healthier foods  and safer chemicals, the focus of this webinar. As large purchasers of meat, it’s important for hospitals to realize the impact of antibiotic resistance in humans. According to the PEW Research Center, an astonishing 80 percent of antibiotics used in this country go toward meat production, with only 20 percent used on people. Just as concerning are the chemicals used in the healthcare setting – many being linked to the very diseases that are trying to be prevented. The presenter will share an example of how a group of leading hospitals was successful in getting manufacturers to eliminate harmful added flame retardants. With a commitment to population health and prevention, explore how hospitals can use their purchasing power to persuade suppliers to change their practices in these key health areas of concern.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the health hazards posed by the use of harmful chemicals in the supply chain to patients, healthcare staff, and the surrounding community.
  2. Describe the necessary structure and key to rolling out initiatives to achieve sustained improvements in the areas of safer chemicals and healthier foods.
  3. Translate the success of other leading hospitals in healthier foods and safer chemicals initiatives into goals or action items for their own facility or health system.
