“The Status on Burst Suppression: Updates in the Pharmacologic Management of Refractory Status Epilepticus”

June 5 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

HealthTrust presents…“The Status on Burst Suppression: Updates in the Pharmacologic Management of Refractory Status Epilepticus”

Current practice guidelines provide suggestions for pharmacotherapeutic options to achieve burst suppression in the management of refractory status epilepticus. However, there remains limited clinical data and standardized recommendations for how to initiate and further manage refractory patients using an individualized approach. Refractory status epilepticus is a neurologic medical emergency with significant morbidity and mortality. Burst suppression is a therapeutic target utilized in refractory status epilepticus to reduce cerebral metabolic demand and minimize ongoing excitotoxicity related to persistent seizure activity. Pharmacists have a unique role in the management of pharmacologic agents used to maintain burst suppression in the intensive care unit.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall definitions of status epilepticus versus refractory status epilepticus and the different phases of care in acute management.
  2. Recognize burst suppression and its role in the management of refractory status epilepticus.
  3. Identify current therapeutic options for achieving burst suppression for management of refractory status epilepticus.
