This session will discuss the use of masks and respirators as source control in healthcare. Masks and respirators are a pivotal intervention in the effort to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, by someone who is infected but may not know it. The presentation will discuss why source control is important, how source control devices work to filter bioaerosols, how the intervention emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what it means for healthcare workers and facilities.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe source control and what it means in a healthcare setting.
  • State the difference between various source control devices: face masks, barrier face coverings, and respirators.
  • Understand aerosol science with regards to viruses and source control devices.
  • Describe the ASTM F3502 Barrier Face Covering Standard and how it relates to the implementation of source control.
