“Don’t Stress Over Prophylaxis: A Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis Review”

June 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

HealthTrust presents…“Don’t Stress Over Prophylaxis: A Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis Review

Stress ulcer prophylaxis is not one size fits all. The most recent guidelines bring some uncertainty regarding specific patient populations and unanswered questions compared to the older guidelines. The new guidelines strive to simplify the standards to four main patient populations. While the newer guidance attempts to decrease stress ulcer prophylaxis in mechanically ventilated patients, new literature published after the guidelines brings debate on prophylaxis in this specific population. The treatment team must look at the patient as a whole when making a decision for stress ulcer prophylaxis.

Learning Objectives  | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Apply the known risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding to determine the need for stress ulcer prophylaxis.
  2. Differentiate between disease states of neurocritical care patients and their respective need for stress ulcer prophylaxis.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the role of enteral nutrition in the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and need for stress ulcer prophylaxis.
