HealthTrust presents…”Go With the Flow: The Development & lmplementation of a Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) Program”

Critically ill patients, who are presenting with significant poor renal function, may initiate renal replacement therapy with the more conservative approach of intermittent hemodialysis (IHD).  Although IHD is first line therapy and helpful in clearing toxins, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) may be more appropriate to initiate in particular cases. However, CRRT is associated with risks and benefits for pharmacists to consider, including the requirement of additional resources.  This is due to the continuous monitoring of laboratory parameters and hemodynamics of the patient when using CRRT. In this session, presenters will share a case study for the development and implementation of a CRRT program in a facility.

Learning Objectives for pharmacists and nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the indications for intermittent and continuous renal replacement therapy.
  2. Identify the key tools and team members necessary for the development and implementation of a continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) program.
  3. Describe the administrative and clinical roles of the Department of Pharmacy and Department of Nursing for a CRRT program.

Learning Objectives for pharmacist technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the indications for intermittent and continuous renal replacement therapy.
  2. Identify the key tools and team members involved with the implementation of a CRRT program.
