This presentation will provide education on evidence-based guideline recommendations for prophylaxis and treatment of cancer related infections. It will review risk stratifications of patients’ risks based on patient characteristics, recommendations of appropriate pharmacotherapies for prophylaxis based on risks and recommend appropriate antimicrobial agents and their doses for treatment of febrile neutropenia based on location of management and infection site. Furthermore, approaches to escalations and durations of therapy for patients with persistent fever will be discussed. This presentation will not address patients undergoing induction therapy for bone marrow transplants.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify validated risk stratification tools to determine route, location of treatment, and spectrum of agents recommended for oncology patients
  2. Recall prophylactic antimicrobial regimens for patients at risk for febrile neutropenia
  3. Recognize appropriate antimicrobial therapy for patients with febrile neutropenia

  1. Define neutropenic fever
  2. Recognize the appropriate drug category for antimicrobial agents
