Management of pain in the inpatient setting is an extremely complex issue that can affect patients not only during their hospital stays, but also once they are discharged. As the mechanisms for acute and chronic pain become more complex, the importance of a pharmacist’s role in pain management continues to evolve. This program will cover general principles of pain management, including universal pain scales, the pathophysiology of various classifications of pain, and both non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment options. The presenter will focus on opioids for the treatment of pain and will include classes of opioids, adverse drug effects and monitoring parameters that are specific to opioid use. With opioids’ reputation for becoming addictive, the potential for tolerance and dependence will also be covered.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate between the pathophysiology of the characteristic types of pain
- Convert between opioid-containing formulations and recommend appropriate dosing
- Communicate to physicians and patients on effective strategies for appropriate opioid use, adverse effects, and proper disposal
- Outline risk factors in identifying patients’ potential for opioid tolerance and dependence
