3M Health Care,* the Center for Healing Solutions* & HMP Global* present an…On-demand Program: “Great Debates & Updates in Temperature Management”
TOPIC #1: Practice Changing Updates Panel: ERAS® Society Guidelines Recommendation for Prevention of Perioperative Hypothermia
After participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
- Explain the importance of temperature management during all phases of the perioperative journey
- Describe warming protocols implemented to support an ERAS® bundle
- Discuss key metrics used to evaluate warming protocols
- Outline strategies to collaborate with industry partners to have a successful implementation
- Discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach when implementing ERAS bundle/Patient warming protocol
- Discuss the role of Patient engagement in successful implementation of ERAS guidelines
Presenters:
Kari M. Cole, Ed.D, CRNA | Chief Nurse Anesthetist, LAC + USC Medical Center | Assistant Clinical Professor | Keck School of Medicine of USC | Los Angeles, California
Hans D. de Boer, M.D., PhD. | Anesthesiologist and Pain Specialist | Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine and Procedural Sedation and Analgesia | Martini General Hospital | Groningen, Netherlands
Cathleen Ferguson, RN, BScN, RNFA, CPN(C) | ERAS Coordinator | St Martha’s Hospital | Nova Scotia, Antigonish, Canada

TOPIC #2: Impact of Inadvertent Perioperative Hypothermia: Causes and Consequences
After participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
- Know the true core temperature monitoring sites, other generally reliably monitoring sites, and which sites are often unreliable
- Understand the normal thermoregulatory system, including afferent input, central control, and afferent defenses
- Understand the importance of perioperative warming, including benefits of pre-operative warming (“heat banking”) via warming gowns, maintenance of warming efforts throughout induction and surgical prep, and requires teamwork
- Understand the importance of ongoing education and engagement regarding importance of perioperative temperature management
Presenters:
Kari M. Cole, Ed.D, CRNA | Chief Nurse Anesthetist, LAC + USC Medical Center | Assistant Clinical Professor | Keck School of Medicine of USC | Los Angeles, California
Daniel I. Sessler, M.D. | Michael Cudahy Professor & Chair | Department of Outcomes Research | Cleveland, Ohio

TOPIC #3: Great Debates and Updates in Temperature Monitoring
- Be able to describe the effects of general anesthesia on warm and cold response thresholds
- Understand the etiology of each phase of the hypothermia curve
- Understand the importance of perioperative temperature monitoring, discuss key metrics to evaluate warming protocol, and potential benefit of consistent thermometry method throughout perioperative process to reduce thermometry variation
- Understand the importance of maintaining patient safety and standards of practice: ASA/AANA/APSF/AORN
Presenters:
