Amid the SARS CoV-2 pandemic a large urban hospital facility implemented a preoperative decolonization protocol for outpatient surgical patients. The intent was to reduce the risk of surgical site infection and readmission of the post-surgical patient. The goal was achieved. Learn how the protocol was developed, implemented, sustained, and expanded from one of the lead champions on this project.

  • Describe the rationale for development of a preoperative decolonization protocol to reduce the risk of SSI
  • Identify key components needed for a protocol development and implementation
  • Discuss clinical evidence that support protocol implementation success
  • Explain steps to expand decolonization protocol to become part of a comprehensive ERAS® strategy for surgical patients
