Please Note: Continuing education credit is only available to those attending the session live. CE credit is not available when accessing the program on demand.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a form of advanced mechanical circulatory support utilized in patients with acute refractory cardiopulmonary failure. The addition of the ECMO circuit can have a significant impact on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of commonly administered medications. Understanding of these PK alterations, especially in the setting of critical illness, is necessary to guide effective dosing. This presentation will review the PK changes of analgesics, sedatives, and antimicrobials in the presence of ECMO and how to optimally dose these agents in critically ill patients on ECMO.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall appropriate indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in critically ill patients
  2. Identify potential effects on medication pharmacokinetics in the presence of the ECMO circuit
  3. Recognize appropriate drug regimens for sedatives, analgesics, and antimicrobials based on available literature for patients receiving ECMO
