Acetaminophen toxicity remains of the most commonly encountered poisonings managed by healthcare providers in in the inpatient setting. With aggressive supportive care and prompt antidotal therapy, the mortality rate associated with acetaminophen toxicity can be decreased to less than 2%. This presentation will review the current literature regarding treatment of massive acetaminophen toxicity in addition to illuminating the role of fomepizole and evaluating alternative dosing regimens of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). The presentation will increase familiarity with this toxidrome and increase understanding in providing optimal treatment to improve patient outcomes.

  1. Recall current evidence-based recommendations for managing acetaminophen toxicity.
  2. Recognize the role of fomepizole in massive acetaminophen toxicity.
  3. Identify alternative off-label regimens for use of N-acetylcysteine in the treatment of acetaminophen poisoning.
