“Has Phenobarbital Got It All? The Role of Phenobarbital in Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome”

HealthTrust presents…”Has Phenobarbital Got It All? The Role of  Phenobarbital in Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome”

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are generally considered the mainstay of treatment for alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). In recent years, interest has grown in investigating if BZDs are superior to other agents, such as phenobarbital. Previous studies have suggested the potential for reduced intensive care unit admission and mechanical ventilation with use of phenobarbital for AWS. While literature exists showing positive clinical outcomes when using phenobarbital, pharmacists and clinicians may not be as familiar with using phenobarbital in AWS due to more clinical experience with the use of BZDs. This session will provide comprehensive education on the role of phenobarbital in AWS so that the attendee gains confidence in recommending the best course of treatment relative to the patient.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses   |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify phenobarbital dosing, monitoring for clinical efficacy, and side effects when used in alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS)
  2. Recall findings from recent clinical research on the role of phenobarbital in AWS
  3. Recognize appropriate recommendations for the use of phenobarbital in AWS and opportunities for integration into institutional protocols
