Facility-based education: “Why Bone Cement Matters to Your Patient Outcomes”

Heraeus* presents…“Why Bone Cement Matters to Your Patient Outcomes”

This programming is provided at no-cost to providers or facilities, and is intended for RNs, surgical techs, or other healthcare professionals who want to learn more or need to gain knowledge and skills in bone cement application techniques and best practices, cement properties, and resulting changes in patient outcomes. Attendees will have an active role in discussion as well as opportunities to ask questions and share experiences.

Program Summary: There is strong evidence to support the use of bone cement as a primary fixation method in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). This educational program aims to provide a high-level overview of the different techniques involved in the application of bone cement, including the antibacterial properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) antibiotic-loaded bone cements. A practical understanding of the importance of cement components as well as cementing best practices and the resulting changes in patient outcomes will be discussed.

Course Goals  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the various viscosities of, and components that make up, bone cement.
  2. Discuss bone cement application techniques within total knee and hip arthroplasty.
  3. Review how antibiotic-loaded bone cement can complement surgeon treatment preferences.
  4. Describe bone cement best practices and cementing techniques to improve patient outcomes.
  5. Demonstrate working knowledge of cement importance to the operative success of TJA.
