HealthTrust presents…”Doing More With Less: Stewardship Without an Infectious Disease Physician”
With the updated Joint Commission guidelines requiring a multi-disciplinary approach to antimicrobial stewardship, it has become imperative that facilities implement a program that includes a physician champion, ideally in the infectious disease (ID) discipline. However, hospitals that do not have an ID physician on staff experience significant challenges in creating an effective stewardship program. This session will present an overview of how one facility utilized its current resources to create an effective antimicrobial stewardship program. The presenters will provide an overview of the barriers encountered and the solutions that ultimately led to the program’s success. The goal is to provide attendees insight in how to create a pharmacist-led stewardship program that effectively achieves the desired outcomes of decreased antibiotic spend per adjusted patient day and increased interventions related to stewardship.
Learning Objectives for Pharmacists | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the regulatory guidelines related to antimicrobial stewardship
- Describe a pharmacist-led antimicrobial stewardship program at an institution without an infectious disease physician on staff
- Evaluate the outcomes associated with a pharmacist-led antimicrobial stewardship program

Danielle Bryant, PharmD, BCPS | Clinical Pharmacy Manager | Rapides Regional Medical Center
Ginger B. Hebron, RPh | Pharmacist | Rapides Regional Medical Center
