HealthTrust presents…”Beyond Diabetes: Examining Sodium‐Glucose Cotransporter‐2 (SGLT‐2) Inhibitors in Heart Failure”

The intersection of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is increasingly prevalent as the pathological relationship between the two often results in worse patient outcomes and poor prognosis. Sodium‐ glucose cotransporter‐2 (SGLT‐2) inhibitors are a novel class of medications that have been shown to have cardiovascular benefits in addition to improving glycemic control. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated the benefit of SGLT‐2 inhibitors in heart failure in patients both with and without diabetes. The presenter will review the role of SGLT‐2 inhibitors in heart failure by examining the current literature, the proposed mechanisms of action and other special considerations.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the proposed mechanism of action of sodium‐ glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT‐2) inhibitors in heart failure.
  2. Discuss the cardiovascular outcomes described in recent literature supporting the use of SGLT‐2 inhibitors in heart failure.
  3. Describe adverse events and safety considerations of SGLT‐2 Inhibitors.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify common dosing schemes of SGLT‐2 inhibitors.
  2. List expanded FDA indications of sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT‐2) inhibitors.
  3. Describe adverse events and safety considerations of SGLT‐2 Inhibitors.
