HealthTrust presents…“Antibacterial Treatment for Multi-Drug Resistant Gram-Negative Infections”

Antibiotic resistance continues to develop due to the inappropriate use of currently available antibiotics. Gram-negative infections are particularly troubling, as they have considerable morbidity and mortality. Amidst this global crisis, the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria set multiple goals to achieve by 2020, including the reduction of inappropriate antibiotic use in the inpatient setting by 20%. As resistance continues to develop against the few agents that maintain activity, novel agents have been developed to combat newer resistant strains. Current knowledge gaps include understanding the role in therapy for both these newer agents and pre-existing agents in order to treat infections while preventing furthered resistance development. This program seeks to review these agents in detail by discussing their indications, spectrums of activity, side effects, monitoring, and literature behind their use.

Learning Objectives for Nurses & Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to

  1. Recognize general spectrums of activity for antibacterial agents used to treat multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram negative infections.
  2. Assess appropriateness of antibacterial doses based on indication, weight, and/or recommended adjustments.
  3. Identify pertinent monitoring parameters and characteristic side effects of antibacterial therapy.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to…

  1. Recall brand and generic names of newer novel broad-spectrum antibiotics.
  2. Differentiate various available dosage formulations for discussed antibacterial agents.
  3. Recognize common antibiotic agents used in the treatment of MDR gram-negative infections.
