Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. IFIs in the critical care setting often present challenging diagnostic and therapeutic problems, and timely diagnosis is essential for favorable outcomes. The presenter will review pharmacologic treatment options for fungal infections in patients in the intensive care unit and discuss where these options fit into current standards of practice. Specifically, diagnostic and evaluation criteria for in the ICU will be highlighted in order to determine the appropriateness of the initiation of antifungal agents for pre-emptive, prophylactic, empiric and definitive treatment strategies.

  2. Recognize risk factors for invasive fungal infections in the intensive care unit
