Medication shortages affect all areas of patient care as well as the provision of large volume parenteral (LVP) solutions and parenteral nutrition (PN) in the critical care, acute care and ambulatory care settings. This presentation will address management of shortages involving LVP solutions, electrolyte, micronutrient, macronutrient and PN compounding supplies while discussing the role of alternative LVP solutions and commercially available multichambered PN products in these care settings. Updated care guidelines, evidence-based literature and clinical standards will be applied to the topics addressed.

Learning Objectives | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the impact of large volume parenteral (LVP) solutions and parenteral nutrition (PN) shortages on patient care populations in the acute care, critical care and ambulatory care settings
  • Recall the appropriateness of alternative LVP solutions and commercially prepared multichambered PN in all patient care settings
  • Recognize evidence-based interventions required to maintain the highest level of patient care while mitigating the negative impact of shortages on patients receiving LVP solutions and PN therapies
