Virtual HTU: “Current Clinical Controversies & Debates in Infectious Diseases”

HealthTrust presents…Virtual HTU: “Current Clinical Controversies & Debates in Infectious Diseases”

Download a copy of this content.

The intersection of infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship can be a controversial space. Three common areas of debate include fidaxomicin versus vancomycin for treatment of Clostridioides difficile, oral antibiotics for severe infections, and the most optimal metrics to measure success in antimicrobial stewardship. In this session, presenters will highlight these three current controversies facing antimicrobial stewardship programs and provide real-world application of literature to practice. First, despite new C. difficile guidelines, questions remain on whether fidaxomicin or vancomycin should be first-line. Second, IV antibiotics have been first-line for serious infections, but emerging literature on oral therapy is shifting that paradigm. Lastly, while antimicrobial stewardship has been in existence for decades, the most optimal metric to measure success remains elusive. Novel metrics will be explored and contrasted with traditional metrics.

Learning Objectives | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize novel and non-traditional metrics to measure the success of antimicrobial stewardship programs
  • Identify infections conventionally treated with intravenous therapy that may be candidates for oral beta-lactam
    therapy
  • Recall the role of fidaxomicin and vancomycin in treatment of C difficile based on updated treatment
    guidelines, literature and practical considerations
