Since the publication of the 2017 ECDP for Optimization of Heart Failure Treatment, new therapies have emerged that expand the armamentarium for the treatment of patients with HFrEF. HFrEF is a complex syndrome managed with multiple classes of medications. The purpose of this presentation is to review the medication-related updates from the 2021 Focused Update to the 2017 Expert Consensus Decision Pathway (ECDP) for Optimization of Heart Failure Treatment. In addition, the presentation will introduce vericiguat and omecamtiv mecarbil and discuss their potential role as emerging therapies in heart failure.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall rationale behind therapeutic updates addressed in the 2021 Update to the 2017 ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway for Optimization of Heart Failure Treatment
  2. Recognize the proposed mechanisms of action and adverse effects of vericiguat and omecamtiv mecarbil and their potential role in heart failure
  3. Identify clinical evidence supporting the use of vericiguat and omecamtiv mecarbil in heart failure

  1. Recall barriers and cost considerations associated with novel treatments in heart failure
  2. Recognize how emerging heart failure therapies are supplied and dosed
