“The Role of the Clinical Laboratory in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sepsis”

Radiometer & acutecaretesting.org* present…“The Role of the Clinical Laboratory in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sepsis”

Sepsis threatens the lives of up to 30 million people each year worldwide. Inappropriate or delayed treatment allows for disease progression to septic shock and as many as 9 million deaths per year. Recent efforts to reduce mortality have focused on generating definitions of sepsis and related conditions. Despite this, the incidence of sepsis has increased significantly in the U.S. with hospitalizations and related costs doubling over the last 10 years.

Rapid diagnosis of sepsis is paramount to reduce mortality. This webinar will summarize current guidelines for sepsis diagnosis and management. With a focus on the role of clinical laboratory testing including lactate. It will discuss the utility of lactate and other biomarkers in both diagnosis and monitoring of sepsis including the preanalytical and analytical requirements for accurate testing. The webinar will also include a brief discussion of the most promising emerging biomarkers and diagnostic strategies in sepsis.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Outline the most recent definitions and guidelines for treatment of sepsis
  2. Explain the importance of clinical laboratory testing in the diagnosis and monitoring of sepsis treatment
  3. Discuss the importance of accurate biomarker testing in the septic patient
  4. Review novel approaches to diagnosis and treatment of sepsis
