HealthTrust presents…“The Opioid Crisis in the United States: Past, Present & Future”

In this presentation, the neurobiology of addiction will be reviewed with a frame on opioid use disorder. Key components of the National
Institutes of Health Helping End Addiction Long‐term (HEAL) Initiative will be reviewed with a highlight on pharmacology of pertinent prescription agents. A number of therapeutic modalities are currently being developed to target opioid overdose and addiction, including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines against heroin and prescription opioids. Finally, recent legislative efforts in regard to opioid prescribing and dispensing will be detailed.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the neurobiology of addiction.
  2. Review historical initiatives to combat opioid misuse and addiction.
  3. Discuss current literature on new therapeutic modalities to combat opioid addiction and new legislation and advocacy efforts surrounding opioid prescribing and dispensing.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review pertinent medications used to treat and mitigate opioid misuse and addiction.
  2. Describe naloxone prescribing and dispensing practices.
  3. Discuss new legislation regulating the prescribing and dispensing of opioid medication.
