“Take it Knee-sy & Go With the Flow: Navigating Pharmacologic Choices for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Major Orthopedic Surgeries”

April 2 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

HealthTrust presents…“Take it Knee-sy & Go With the Flow:  Navigating Pharmacologic Choices for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Major Orthopedic Surgeries

Patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery are at an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Without pharmacological prophylasxis, the rates of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) detected with venography with contrast were ~54% after total hip arthroplasty and 64% after total knee arthroplasty. However, there is a variation in practice of how to manage these patients postoperatively. At the end of this session, attendees should possess the knowledge necessary to recommend evidence-based pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis regimens, and their intended durations, in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify VTE risk factors for patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery procedures
  2. Recall pharmacological therapies for VTE prophylaxis
  3. Recognize the appropriate duration of VTE prophylaxis and the necessary monitoring for each agent
