HealthTrust presents…“Antiarrhythmics & QT Prolongation: Avoiding Drug Interactions”

A QT interval in cardiology is a measure of the time between the start of the Q wave and the end of the T wave in the heart’s electrical cycle. This webinar will provide a refresh of cardiac physiology by describing the relationship between different ion channels and the cardiac muscle action potential. The presenter will then discuss the different classes of antiarrhythmics, their mechanisms of action—including effects on different ion channels—and identify their effects on the QT interval duration. Medications which affect the QT interval other than antiarrhythmics will also be reviewed. Recommendations will be provided regarding the management and monitoring of these interactions, as well as resources which may be helpful to the pharmacist encountering these interactions in daily practice.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacist member attendees:

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the electrophysiology of the heart and the connection between different ion channels
    and the electrocardiogram.
  2. Identify antiarrhythmic classes and their effects on the QT interval.
  3. Manage interactions between antiarrhythmic medications and other drugs which may cause QT
    prolongation.

Presenter:

Melinda Deubner, PharmD, BCCCP  |  ICU clinical pharmacy specialist  |  Memorial Hospital of South Bend

Target Audience: Pharmacists
