HealthTrust presents…“Pharmacist’s Role in the Management of Acute Stroke”

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States, About 87% of strokes are ischemic strokes.  Patients who receive reperfusion therapy within less than 3-4.5 hours have been shown to have improved neurological outcomes. Pharmacists can help evaluate tPA contraindications, calculate the tPA dose, review medical histories and medication lists, manage blook pressure, reconstitute tPA, counsel on the risk and benefits of tPA and monitor the patient after tPA administration. Current evidence suggests that having a pharmacist at the bedside during an acute ischemic stroke significantly reduces the door-to-needle time to administration of tPA, increases the percentage of patients that receive tPA within the 60-minute door-to-balloon time and increases use of evidence-based therapies. This program seeks to review the roles and responsibilities of the clinical pharmacist at the bedside of a stroke, the literature that demonstrates the benefits of having a pharmacist at the bedside, and some of the evidence-based therapies in the management of acute ischemic stroke.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the benefits of having a pharmacist as care providers for stroke patients.
  2. Identify roles and responsibilities of the pharmacist when assisting the team in the management of an acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.
  3. Discuss the management and monitoring of a patient presenting with an acute ischemic stroke.
