Bleeding is one of the most dangerous complications of surgery and the biggest obstacle to wound healing. Hemostasis is the first step in normal wound healing and is an important strategy for the prevention of post-surgical adhesion formation. This educational activity describes the process of normal wound healing, as well as the consequences of delayed healing and the techniques and products used to promote successful healing. The pathogenesis and consequences of adhesion formation are also explained, followed by a discussion of the methods used to prevent adhesions, including good surgical technique and the use of mechanical barriers and pharmaceuticals.

Learning Objectives  |  After completing this continuing nursing education activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Review the importance of hemostasis in wound healing and adhesion prevention.
  2. Outline the steps in normal wound healing.
  3. Discuss the consequences of delayed healing and some of the techniques, products, and regenerative therapies available to promote successful healing.
  4. Outline the steps of adhesion formation.
  5. Describe the pathogenesis, consequences, and prevention methods of adhesion formation.
