HealthTrust presents…“Navigating the COVID‐19 Vaccine Landscape: A Review of Vaccine Modalities Studied in COVID‐19”

The expedited development of vaccines for the prevention of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID‐2019) has put a spotlight on traditional and emerging modalities of vaccines. This presentation will begin with an overview of the immune response and a review of the current landscape of vaccines to prevent COVID‐19. Traditional and non‐traditional vaccine platforms will be examined to compare and contrast mechanisms, advantages and disadvantages, and other key attributes of vaccine candidates. The presenter will also evaluate the published clinical data of the available COVID‐19 vaccines in terms of safety and immunogenicity in order to determine the place in therapy.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |   At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. List the vaccine platforms approved and under review for COVID‐19 including the advantages and drawbacks to each method.
  2. Discuss the utility of adjuvants in vaccines, especially in the prevention of COVID‐19.
  3. Describe the clinical trials of COVID‐19 vaccines to determine utility and current knowledge gaps.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the differences between the types of vaccine platforms.
  2. Outline manufacturer recommendations for the storage and handling of COVID‐19 vaccines.
  3. Discuss strategies for educating patients about the benefits and risks of the COVID‐19 vaccines.
