Peristomal skin complications are commonly managed by the person with an ostomy or nurses caring for them, without complete understanding of the condition. Peristomal skin complications have far outreaching implications that affect the individual’s health utility and places a burden on healthcare economics. This session will focus on peristomal skin complications’ identification, management and prevention. Additional focus will be placed on the effect of peristomal complications on an individual’s health utility and the economic impact on the healthcare system.

Learning Objectives for Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify three peristomal skin problems, causes and ostomy management.
  2. Discuss two implications of peristomal skin problems.
  3. Describe the overall impact of peristomal skin complications on health utility & healthcare economics.
